Blind Willie McTell was born on this date, 1898. I appreciate the many different lineages of blues throughout American history, but have always been leery of the white boy romanticization of the blues, and the way so much of white musical culture has benefitted from the genre. It seems like peak white privilege to scavenge an art form that resulted from the worst legacy of systemic racism and suffering, slavery, spiritual oppression, and socio-economic hardship. I try to balance my appreciation with a little bit of awareness that I will never understand.
