Photo indexing: a strange combination
I finally started the project of organizing the past 11 years or so of photos in some way where I can easily search for particular images when I need them. One of the aggravating things about my life has been basically reinventing the wheel every time I need a high resolution photo for a publication or some other purpose. It takes forever and is often slipshod, as in, I just grab the first relatively decent high res pic of a particular plant species that I can find. So indexing the photos is an attempt to create some kind of filing system that will also stand a chance of presenting the best work I have. The above, the often totally deserted highway between Vizcaino and Bahía de Tortugas, Baja California Sur. The other goal is to separate out the very best of all of the photos, and possible sell them or maybe use them for some kind of travelogue style account of my Baja research, or something. It's incredibly tedious and I can only really do maybe an hour at a time. Media management is also soul management in some ways, since the photos are of course attached to all kinds of actual experiences. The same thing arose for me when I was digitizing al of my vinyl. Music is so evocative of time and place. Digitizing albums is not a batch process, really. I mean, you have to actually listen to every single album in real time as it is being digitally recorded. Indexing photos takes a lot of time too, just looking at every photo and trying to evaluate whether it is even worth filing or not. I start to get a rushed and irritable feeling, and that's when I stop. The above road sign also on the highway from Vizcaino to Bahía de Tortugas. I would love to see berrendos someday. They are the critically endangered Antilocapra (pronghorn) species of Baja. Music today: Cecil McBee, 86 years old:
